She was staring down the barrel of 30 years behind bars but a Colombian judge has just agreed to Cassie Sainsbury's six year plea deal.

The Australian woman was arrested back in April for trying to smuggle 5.8 kg of cocaine through Bogota Airport hidden in 18 packets of headphones.

With good behaviour and time already served she could be released as early as 2019 but may have to stay in the country for a couple of years on parole.

She's also been fined more than $130,000.

Her lawyer has confirmed plans to appeal the financial penalty.

While it doesn't look like police have found any sign of Angelo – the mystery man Sainsbury claims forced her to carry out the bungled attempt.
