Bruce McAvaney believes Margaret Court "doesn’t know how many people she’s hurting".

Court came under plenty of fire for her comments regarding same-sex marriage, with many - even Google, briefly - calling for Margaret Court Arena to change its name.

McAvaney agreed her comments are "hurtful", and she needs to take some responsibility.

"Everyone's entitled to their opinion, and she's the greatest female player this country (has seen)," he said on the Rush Hour with Jars and Louie.

"But I just wish someone would say to her - and it might have to be Barry, her husband - look, Marg, you've had your say, what you're doing is very hurtful.

"You don't realise how many people now are affected by what you are saying or doing, and you're opening up a very difficult situation for Tennis Australia.

"It's actually really sad, to be truthful...she's a devout Christian who's set in her ways, but I just feel that she doesn't realise how many people she's hurting."

However, McAvaney doesn't believe Margaret Court Arena should be renamed.

"I'd be disappointed if Tennis Australia changed the naming of the arena," he said.

"I think that would be a wrong decision."
