Calls For Aussies To Be Legally Allowed To Carry Stun Guns & Mace

Crossbench Senator David Leyonhjelm has made quite a controversial call, he believes everyday Aussies should be legally allowed to carry mace, even stun guns for self defence, as the threat of terrorism increases across the globe.

Speaking to Channel 9's Today on Wednesday, Leyonhjelm believes there would be a lot of people supporting his calls for a law change.

"I think quite a lot of people think along the same lines. We get into arguments about the details of course, but I think the general idea about being responsible for your own safety and having the means to do it, is pretty popular," he said.

"Pepper, mace and personal tasers which are non-lethal, should not be prohibited, should not be restricted. You shouldn't need a licence, you should be able to carry those for self defence."

"The police can't be everywhere and they acknowledge that. They say 'it takes us 5, 10, 15 minutes, even in the city to be there' and by that stage you can have a lot of victims."
