Federal minister Christopher Pyne has apparently been boasting about legalising same-sex marriage in Australia, "sooner than everyone thinks".

Pyne, one of the Turnbull government's most senior ministers, was secretly recorded making the comments at a function in Sydney last week attended by Liberal Party colleagues.

In audio leaked to The Daily Telegraph, Pyne reportedly claims the government is in the "winners circle", but they have to deliver "a couple of things and one of those we've got to deliver before too long is marriage equality in this country".

Pyne is yet to address the comments, but his office released a statement on Sunday night, a spokesmen denying there were imminent plans to legalise same-sex marriage.

"The minister did not say action on marriage equality was imminent," he said.

"The minister said that while marriage equality had failed to materialise over the last two years it would become a reality eventually."
