There are calls for new cigarette packet warnings following research from an Australian study about the impact of smoking.

The Cancer Council Victoria report shows a misunderstanding surrounding the consequences of smoking and the ongoing health risks.

Particularly, there were concerns about the lack of knowledge of 13 health conditions that have been causally linked to smokng, such as:

  • pancreatic cancers;
  • infertility in women;
  • erectile dysfunction;
  • stomach cancer;
  • blindness;
  • liver cancer;
  • diabetes;
  • kidney cancer;
  • peptic ulcer;
  • bladder cancer;
  • leukaemia;
  • ectopic pregnancy; and
  • rheumatoid arthritis.

"Tobacco use damages nearly every organ of the body but as this study shows, many Australian smokers are not aware of the wide range of serious health problems they could face if they continue to smoke," Professor Wakefield from the Cancer Council said.

The campaign detailing risks regarding lung and throat cancers has been noted as a success, however it is argued that other health concerns urgently need to be highlighted.
