Footage has emerged of a police officer driving at speeds up to 220km/h in an attempt to catch a motorist who was driving in the incorrect lane.

According to Nine News, the man was hit with a $325 fine and lost three demerit points after the incident on the Pacific Highway near Clybucca as it is against the law to drive in the right lane with no intention of overtaking.

“The reason I’ve stopped you, because you’ve been driving in the right-hand lane not overtaking anyone,” the officer told the man.

"Any speed limit over 80 kilometres an hour you have to drive in the left."

The case was heard in court after the man challenged the penalty, with the fine being reduced to $200 and no demerit points lost.
