Odds on you didn't get all your Christmas wishes yesterday, with stats showing we got up to 21 million unwanted gifts this year.

Gumtree says 3 million Aussies are expecting to sell a present online, with iPhones, barbeques, bar fridges, and exercise bikes among the top listings.

Gumtree spokeswoman Kirsty Dunn says it's a boom time for them.

"We typically see a 20% increase in new ad posts after Christmas. A whole bunch of different things from speakers, to Fitbits, to secret Santa presents that haven't even been unwrapped."

There's cash to be made too, with the average unwanted gift going for at least $60.

Gumtree says there are some tricks to unloading that unwanted present quickly though:

  • Be descriptive.
  • Let people know it's an unwanted gift and if you have a receipt or warranties for it.
  • Upload good quality photos
  • Meet in person and do transactions face to face cash in hand.

As for those of you trying to cash in on the bargains?

  • Do your research: Dedicate time to researching what’s out there and the average price of similar items.
  • Ask questions
  • Negotiate!! Don’t be afraid to negotiate a price you think is fair but don’t offer an unrealistic amount.
  • Meet in person only
  • Use common sense. If something seems too good to be true, it probably is!
