There are reports of a dire situation on Manus Island, following the closure of the Australian offshore detention centre housing some 600 male detainees.

Power and water have been cut as the Papua New Guinea navy re-takes control of the site.

Behrouz Boochani, a journalist and detained asylum seeker, has tweeted from Manus Island, detailing the situation as it unfolds.

It is understood that approximately 600 detainees are refusing to leave the island after the closure of the centres.

In terms of the plans for the detainees, 20 have been settled into the US following a refugee swap deal struck under the Obama leadership and upheld by Trump.

According to Vice, the other options for detainees are to return to their home country or seek permanent settlement in Papua New Guinea or somewhere else.
