A woman in her 20s has drowned at a Sydney beach and lifeguards are searching for a missing man.

The woman's body was discovered washed up at Maroubra Beach by a jogger at about 6am on Tuesday, according to NSW Surf Life Saving.

It's believed a man, also in his 20s, was with the woman and he's yet to be found.

A search effort is underway in choppy conditions involving the Westpac Rescue Helicopter, police, and lifeguards on jet skis.

A number of beaches in NSW are closed due to treacherous weather conditions with only Coogee Beach open in Sydney.

Police are appealing for information after a body was located in Sydney’s Eastern Beaches.

About 6am today (Tuesday 14 February 2017), officers attached to Eastern Beaches Local Area Command attended Maroubra Beach, following reports a woman’s body had been located by a jogger.

A crime scene has been established and an investigation is now underway.

At this stage, her death is not being treated as suspicious.

Following inquiries, a man believed to be in his 20s, is also believed to be missing and police have commenced a search in the area.

Investigations are continuing.
