Research from the Australian Bureau of Statistics has revealed that dementia has become the leading cause of death among Australian women, and is the second highest cause of death of all Australians.

Heart disease was found by the ABS to be the leading cause of death, with 19,077 deaths in 2016, while 13,126 deaths were caused by dementia.

According to the ABS, individuals who died from dementia were more likely to be over 85 years of age and more likely to be female.

The number of deaths from heart disease has declined recently, which has been attributed to the increase in treatments and prevention medicine.

However, the figures around dementia have risen, up from 5.3 per cent to 8.3 per cent.
