A surgeon has admitted to the grim activity of burning his initials into the livers of two transplant patients, in a case that prosecutors say is “without legal precedent in criminal law”.

Simon Bramhall pleaded guilty to two counts of assault, after using an argon beam coagulator to leave his initials on the organs, AAP reports.

The device is normally used to seal bleeding blood vessels with an electric beam, and while the marks are not believed to be permanently harmful, prosecutor Tony Badenoch said Bramhall abused his position with an “intentional use of unlawful force.”

Birmingham’s Queen Elizabeth Hospital suspended Bramhall in 2013 after a colleague noticed the initials on the organs during follow-up surgery.

The 53-year-old surgeon resigned in 2014 after disciplinary action.

He is free on bail and is due for sentencing on January 12 at Birmingham Crown Court.
