Ticket scalpers could be on notice with the Turnbull government reportedly looking into a complete ban on reselling tickets to major cultural and sporting events.

Assistant Treasurer Michael Sukkar has confirmed total of five options are being tabled as possible ways to curb the reselling, one including the mandatory display of warning notices on reselling websites, the Daily Telegraph reports.

“I expect consumers should always get a fair deal when purchasing tickets for events and to access all available tickets on the market,” Mr Sukkar said.

“While we are still working to properly address these problems, Australians can be assured that we will do all that is necessary to protect them from any unfair or unscrupulous practices.”

A recent Treasury report called for ticket resellers to “disclose certain information when reselling tickets”.

They wrote: “The secondary ticket market creates opportunities for consumers to be exploited when they do not have enough information to make informed purchasing decisions.”

Back in August, it the ACCC announced they’d instituted proceedings in the Federal Court against ticket reseller viagogo AH (Viagogo), alleging the company breached Australian Consumer Law when reselling entertainment, music and live sport between May and June 2017.
