How many kangaroos do you have loose in the top paddock? Well, in order to find out Australians can test their bonza knowledge of “Aussie slang” with an online quiz in the lead-up to Australia Day.

ADCNSW Chairman Angelos Frangopoulous said that January is the perfect time to take a gander at Australia’s unique vernacular.

“Our language is evolving faster than ever and we want to know whether you can separate your ‘stubbies’ from your ‘sambos’ or tell the difference between ‘hard yakka’ and ‘good tucker’,” he said.

“From the everyday use of words such as ‘arvo’ and ‘mate’ to the popularisation of ‘strewth’ and ‘crikey’ by our favourite TV and film personalities, Aussie slang is innately linked to our cultural heritage.”

Put together by the Australia Day Council of NSW (ADNSW), the online quiz hosted encourages participants to match phrases like ‘knackered’ and ‘mate’s rates’ with their full definitions.

Three-time Paralympic Gold Medalist and OZ Day 10K racing legend Kurt Fearnley OAM said the quiz was a cracker of a way to get into the Australia Day spirit.

“To hear a ‘g’day’ when I am competing overseas is one of my favourite things – it’s an instant mood booster and a reminder of Aussie comradery, humour – all the stuff our great nation is known for,” Mr Fearnley said.

“I’ll be trying for my twelfth win at the OZ Day 10K on Australia Day morning but I guarantee that win or lose, that arvo I’ll be throwing a snag on the barbie and having a cold one with my missus and best mates!”
