Donald Trump has proposed a new brand of armed forces – which he’s dubbed the “space force”.

The US President was speaking to military personal in San Diego and explaining his new strategy when this idea was proposed.

“My new national strategy for space recognises that space is a war-fighting domain, just like the land, air and sea,” said Trump. “We may even have a ‘space force’—develop another one—space force. We have the Air Force. We’ll have the space force. We have the Army, the Navy.”

While Trump forgot the Coast Guard and the Marines – who comprised a large proportion of the crowd – he was enthusiastic about the idea:

“I said ‘maybe we need a new force. We’ll call it the space force.’ Not really serious. And then I said ‘What a great idea. Maybe we’ll have to do that.’

No wars have been fought in space to date, but if Trump’s presidency has taught us anything, we know to expect the unexpected.
