It turns out happy little vegemites are happy for a reason.

A new study by Victoria University's College of Health and Biomedicine has found those of us who favour the yeast-based spread are less anxious and stressed than those who don't.

The findings are the result of an online survey of 520 people in Australia, New Zealand and the UK which examined what kind of impact vegemite, marmite and promite has on the moods of those who add them to their diet.

Researchers used a depression anxiety stress scale believe the high levels of Vitamin B – including B1, B2, B3, B6, B9 and B12 – may have a positive impact on mental health.

"We know these extracts contain some of the world's richest sources of B vitamins, which are essential in keeping our bodies energised and regulating the nervous system," said lead researcher Professor Vasso Apostolopoulo.

More than two million Australians suffer from anxiety.

Globally, major depressive disorders is expected to become second only to heart disease as the leading cause of death and disability in the next 20 years.
