SpaceX founder Elon Musk has made history, successfully launching the world's most powerful rocket from the Kennedy Space Centre in Florida on Wednesday.

After a few issues with the local wind speed and a delayed start, liftoff was flawless, while three boosters programmed to return to Earth minutes after the launch landed perfectly without a hitch.

The spacecraft, carrying one of Musk's Tesla Roadster sportscars and a mannequin in the front seat, is aiming for a solar orbit reaching Mars. The dash will also play David Bowie's hit Space Oddity on a continuous loop as its predicted travel will take billions of years.

Speaking to the media on Monday, Musk was confident that whatever the outcome was, it would be spectacular.

"It's going to be an exciting success or an exciting failure," he said.
