The government's going for gold in tonight's federal budget with millions being set aside for Aussie Comm Games athletes to make sure they top the medal tally at next year's event on the Gold Coast.

2000-odd athletes are set to benefit from a $15 million fund that will pay for better equipment, high-performance training and the best coaches possible to ensure our sporting greats snatch the top spot from England, who pipped up as the 2014 Comm Games in Glasgow.

Athletes will also be able to travel to international events over the next 11 months so they can experience competition against the best in the world.

Canberra has already invested a ton of cash to help make Queensland the most successful Comm Games host in history, including $95 million for Stage 2 of the G:Link Light Rail and $15 million to upgrade Metricon Stadium, currently home to the Gold Coast Suns AFL club.
