While a cyclone is battering far north Queensland, questions have been raised about the naming process that gave us a 'Cyclone Debbie'.

In a nutshell, the Bureau of Meteorology is in charge of cyclone names in the Australian Region.

They construct a list of names from A-Z - alternating between male and female - that are chosen from in order once a storm appears.

If a cyclone is deemed to have been so large, or to have caused enough damage, the name is retired (i.e. Tracy or Larry).

So, without further ado, here is the list that the BoM is currently choosing from that gave us the name Debbie:
