Immigration Minister Peter Dutton reckons young Aussies shouldn't have to "compete with foreigners" to get a job in the fast food industry.

He's confirmed this morning the Fast Food Industry Labour Agreement has been scrapped, a deal that allowed hundred of overseas workers on 457 visas to be employed by major chains like McDonalds, KFC and Hungary Jack's. It's the first time an entire sector has been banned from hiring foreigners.

"Australian workers, particularly young Australians, must be given priority," Immigration Minister Peter Dutton said in a statement on Thursday.

457 visa holders currently working here will be forced to leave Australia once their agreements run out, unless their employer can present an individual case as to why they should remain.

Individual businesses however, will still be able to make requests under normal labour agreement arrangements to ensure exceptional circumstances can be considered.

500 visas have been approved in the industry over the past 4 years.
