Health Experts Raise Concerns About Baby Formula

It's every parents worst nightmare, health experts are warning us to be wary of some brands of baby formula.

The Brisbane Times says tiny, potentially toxic, needle-like particles have been found in formula found here including Nestle's NAN HA 1 Gold and Nature's Way Kids Smart 1.

Friends of the Earth Australia commissioned Arizona State Uni to carry out a bunch of tests on seven off-the-shelf brands, two failed.

They explain that regular hydroxyapatite is a naturally occurring, calcium-rich mineral that strengthens bones and teeth, so they understand why it's in there but not the nano-sized version.

Experts are worried its extremely small size may give it unique properties and behaviours, some of which are unknown and could target your baby's fragile immune system.

Startlingly the European Union's Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety (SCCS) decided these needle-like nano hydroxyapatite were potentially toxic and shouldn't be used in oral care products such as toothpaste and mouthwash. It also found these nanoparticles were "fully synthetic" but somehow they've found their way into infant formula.

A Food Standards Australia and New Zealand (FSANZ) spokesman said the ASU study didn't provide any new information that may suggest the affected formulas posed a public health and safety risk.
