Aussies are being urged to check and see if they’re owed lost wages.

There’s over $2.5 million sitting in a trust fund held by the fair work ombudsman on behalf of previous employers who were found to have underpaid staff.

The money is left over from cases where the Ombudsman has investigated an employer but has been unable to contact former employees.

"Many workers leave their jobs without even knowing that they were underpaid so all workers should check whether they are entitled to unclaimed wages," Spokesperson Sandra Parker said.

"With an average entitlement around $250, anyone who thinks they may have been short-changed in a former job should visit the FWO website to make a claim."
