The US and South Korea are fighting fire with fire, conducting a joint ballistic missile drill less than 24 hours after North Korea successfully launched their first intercontinental ballistic missile, reportedly capable of travelling as far as Darwin.

They're sending a strong warning to Kim Jong-un to stop making "provocative" moves, the countries released a statement saying they are "committed to peace and prosperity on the Korean Peninsula and throughout the Asia-Pacific."

North Korea's possession of a working ICBM is something that US President Donald Trump had previously vowed "won't happen".

Australia's Foreign Minister Julie Bishop said what is of big concern now is that North Korea will master the technology to mount a nuclear warhead on such a weapon.

"It's the scale and the pace of North Korea's testing that makes it a threat not just to South Korea and nations in the region but to the United States and directly to Australia," she said on Sky News.

"This is a serious escalation of North Korea's ability to threaten nations even further afield than its immediate region."

Since Jong-un came into power the North have rapidly advanced in missile technology, conducting multiple rocket launches. There are still doubts though whether they can miniaturise a nuclear weapon to fit a missile nose cone and master its survival as it re-enters the Earth's atmosphere.
