John Howard insists Australians can “trust” Donald Trump while predicting the US leader will see out his entire presidential term – yet many across social media are seemingly less convinced.

The former Aussie PM told a United States Studies Centre panel event it was too premature to judge the “different style” of the controversial leader, calling for confidence in Australia’s relationship with the United States, SBS reports.

“I think the key to [President] Trump’s political future lies very much in how successful he is on meeting the expectations of those who supported him,” Mr Howard said in Sydney on Thursday.

“His style is different and we have to look through the style. We’ve got to be careful we don’t fall for the trap of rushing to judgment.”

During the session, Mr Howard also gave current Australian Prime Minister a 10/10 scorecard for his current dealings with Trump, touching specifically on the US-Australia deal to relocate Manus Island refugees.

"I think Malcolm Turnbull has handled him very well,” he said.

“[He] came out of the exchange over the Manus Island deal as someone who was sticking up for the Australian national interest and that's what a Prime Minister should do."
