Rebel Wilson could soon learn the outcome of her defamation case with reports the jury has retired to consider its verdict.

The Pitch Perfect actress is suing Bauer Media for articles published in May 2015, which allegedly damaged her reputation by portraying her as a serial liar and saw Wilson miss out on lucrative film roles, reports Nine News.

The articles claimed to reveal the truth about Wilson’s “real name, age and childhood” after the actor added a touch of “fantasy” in order to “make it in Hollywood”.

Now based in California, the 37-year-old grew up in Sydney and has maintained during the trial she has never lied to journalists.

In his opening address to jurors yesterday, Judge John Dixon spoke of legendary Japanese filmmaker Akira Kurosawa and quoted from Shakespeare’s Othello, The Australian reports.

“I will remind you of some Shakespeare. Othello,” he said.

“Good name in man and woman, dear my lord, is the immediate jewel of their souls. Who steals my purse steals trash ... But he that filches from me my good name, robs me of that which not enriches him, and makes me poor indeed,” he read.

Judge Dixon urged jurors to consider what the average, reasonable reader would make of the article.
