A new report has shown that Australians receiving support payments from the government are only able to access six per cent of rental properties, with the cost of renting pricing people out of a home.

The study by Anglicare found that of 67,000 rental properties available across Australia, only 3,729 were found to be affordable for households on government income support payments.

In Sydney, just one per cent of rental properties are affordable, which worked out to be just 57 of the 18,000 properties available.

"These results show that finding an affordable and suitable home to rent in the private market is extraordinarily challenging," the Anglicare report said.

Startlingly, not a single property was affordable for a single person on Newstart or Youth Allowance in Sydney, Canberra, Melbourne, Adelaide, Darwin or Perth.

Anglicare is pushing for a change to laws regarding renter's rights.

Affordability was calculated on the basis of rent being no more than 30 per cent of a household budget.
