Karl Stefanovic has called for the Australia Day date to be changed/

In an address on the Today show this morning, Karl said he has “changed his mind” on the debate “some want to ignore”.

“January 26 marks the day this land changed forever for one of the oldest and most beautiful cultures in the world,” he said.

“To this day, mortality rates for indigenous and Torres Strait Islanders are alarming. It wasn’t until March 1962 that the Menzies government finally gave the right to vote for all aboriginal people.

“If we are to truly follow through with the apology and move forwards together hand-in-hand, arm-in-arm, then I believe it must change,” he said.

“So let’s do it together. Certainly, let’s debate it together.”

The presenter wants the date to be changed from January 26 to New Year's Day so that the country can "move forward".

Karl said that changing the date to January 1st would be much more enjoyable for every Australian.

"On a much lighter note, the 26th is a rubbish day for a party anyway – whoever had a party on the 26th of anything?

"So, my suggestion is to move Australia Day to the 1st of January.

"That way, we get to combine New Years with another party."
