With the fight now on for the Sydney seat of Bennelong, Kristina Keneally has used social media to perfectly roll her political opponent John Alexander.

After resigning from federal parliament thanks to the citizenship saga, Mr Alexander is now campaigning for the Sydney electorate, but his latest piece of positive PR spin did not go down so well.

Shared last night across Twitter and Facebook, the former tennis star is pictured with a landline phone alongside his “wonderful volunteers” and “chatting to local residents”.

Except many amused bystanders – including Ms Keneally – noted the phones weren’t actually plugged in.

Post

“Might want to plug your phones in if you want to make those calls,” said one commentator, while another said “Maybe imminent sign how disconnected he is”.

On Twitter, Ms Keneally also updated her Twitter profile to say “knows how to plug in a phone”.

Labor frontbencher Chris Bowen also cottoned on to the image, tweeting that it “helps to plug the phone in before you make your calls guys.”

Post

Since the gaffe, Mr Alexander’s Facebook post has been edited to “assure” voters the phones were in fact “plugged in”.

It comes as the Bennelong by-election outcome on December 18 could create some real headaches for the Turnbull government, who could lose its majority if Ms Kennelly’s return to politics proves successful.
