Scotland Yard has named Khalid Masood as the man responsible for the London terror attack, while Islamic State is also claiming responsibility.

Masood ploughed a rented car into pedestrians on Westminster Bridge before fatally stabbing police officer Keith Palmer inside the gates of parliament, before he was shot dead.

The death toll was revised down to four overnight, while at least 29 people (including Adelaide woman Trish Neis-Beer, who has an injured foot) are still in hospital.

52 year old Masood is a British-born father of 3 and English teacher, who had a varied criminal history - convicted of several things from grievous bodily harm to assault and possession of weapons.

British Prime Minister Theresa May says Masood had previously been investigated by spy agency MI5 for violent extremism, but had never been convicted of anything terror-related.

The PM described him as a "peripheral figure" and not part of the current intelligence picture.

Overnight, as thousands of Londoners gathered in Trafalgar Square for a candlelit vigil, police were carrying out raids at at least 6 addresses believed to be linked to the rampage. Eight people were arrested on suspicion of preparing an act of terror.
