US rapper Macklemore has cancelled his press conference today ahead of Sunday's performance at the NRL Grand Final.

He was scheduled to arrive this morning and do a press conference at midday to talk about the gig, however the musician's Australian publicist has reportedly told the Daily Telegraph that the media spot had been cancelled and it was unclear whether it would be moved to a different time.

There has been a lot of talk about the rapper's set list, which includes the song Same Love in light of the same-sex marriage debate in Australia.

Former PM Tony Abbott called for the song to be dropped from the performance as it 'politicises sport'.

PM Malcolm Turnbull has backed Macklemore, describing him as a 'great artist'.

"He should perform whatever he wants to perform, I mean for heaven's sake, it's the half-time entertainment at the grand final," Mr Turnbull told the Ten Network.

The 2015 hit song Same Love is currently back at number one on the Australian iTunes charts.
