A man has died and six people were injured following a crash in Footscray that triggered an explosion.

Windows were smashed in a nearby buildings at the corner of Gordon and Barkly streets in Footscray.

The explosion occurred on the truck about 11.55am.

At this time emergency services are yet to determine what has caused the explosion and two cylinders that remain on the roadway are still being assessed.

Detectives from the Arson and Explosives Squad and Major Collision Investigation Unit will attend the scene to assist with the investigation.

Police believe a number of people in the area at the time of the incident may have left without speaking to police and they are urging those people to come forward, along with any other witnesses.
