A 74-year-old man has been charged after allegedly sending a bullet to Barnaby Joyce's electorate office.

The incident happened during the New England by-election campaign last month, with the bullet arriving at Mr Joyce's electoral office on Peel Street on November 6.

According to police, the envelope containing the bullet was opened by a staff member.

The man has been charged with one count of using a carriage service to menace/harass/offend and one count of stalk/intimidate intend fear physical harm.

He was conditionally bailed to appear at Armidale Local Court on February 12, 2018.
