The man accused of deliberately mowing down people with a car in Melbourne is in court where he's expected to face five counts of murder.

Dimitrious Gargasoulas, 26, is in the Melbourne Magistrates' Court accused of deliberately striking pedestrians in the vicinity of Bourke and Queens streets about 1.30pm on Friday.

The Windsor man is expected to be charged with five counts of murder and other charges are pending, police say in a statement.

Police shot him on Friday and he had surgery for a bullet wound to his arm on Saturday.

Police had to wait for permission from doctors before they could interview him on Monday.

POLICE STATEMENT:

A 26-year-old man is currently in Melbourne Magistrates’ Court following the Bourke Street incident in Melbourne on Friday that claimed the lives of five people.

It is alleged the man deliberately struck a number of pedestrians in the vicinity of Bourke and Queens streets at about 1.30pm.

Police shot the man who was the sole occupant of the vehicle and he was taken to hospital for treatment.

The Windsor man is expected to be charged with five counts of murder and other charges are pending.
