A 41-year-old man who allegedly punched a woman in the face during a road rage incident on the Central Coast has been charged, after handing himself into police.

Dash cam footage uploaded to Facebook shows the man approaching a woman, who'd just got out of her car at a set of traffic lights in Lake Munmorah.

21-year-old Bianca Lee Sams has admitted to throwing nails and a chisel at the man in the lead up to the attack, telling Channel 9 he had been tailgating her friend, who was driving the ute.

"I threw them because I had to ... (it was) what I had to do to protect me and my friend," she said.

"We were both scared, We didn't know what to do. We tried swerving ... and he kept following us."

The man was charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

He was granted conditional bail and will appear at Wyong Local Court on August 30.
