Shocking images have emerged of a man bypassing security measures to run towards a large, flaming effigy at the Burning Man festival in the US.

According to the dailytelegraph.com.au, the 41-year-old man has since died in a burns centre in California.

The man was rescued by firefighters and airlifted to hospital and preliminary reports suggest that the man was not under the influence of alcohol.

The Burning Man festival is an annual event that runs for nine days and celebrates art and music in the desert.

It is understood that while several attempts have been made in the past, this is the first time that someone has broken through the security measures and entered the flames in the 15-year history of the festival.
