A 58-year-old man has undergone surgery after being attacked by a deer in the NSW Royal National Park on Friday afternoon.

It's reported he was trying to scare off a group of stags near his home when one of them charged at him, spearing him in the chest and abdomen with its antlers.

The man has sustained a collapsed lung, and was treated at the scene by paramedics before being airlifted to St George Hospital for surgery.

The Illawarra Mercury has reported that the man is a member of the Bulgo Beach coastal shack community, with the beach area secluded and unable to be reached by vehicle.
