The remainder of the Margaret River Pro has been cancelled due to shark fears.

Two men were attacked by sharks in separate incidents near the event area on Monday.

The World Surf League says the safety of surfers is a priority and they have therefore decided to cancel the rest of the competition.

Alejandro Travaglini, 37, needed surgery to both legs after he was mauled at Cobblestones beach in Gracetown, while 41-year-old Jason Longgrass walked to an ambulance after he was bitten on the leg at the nearby Lefthanders break.

The Margaret River Pro's main surf site is less than 15km away.

One-time world champion Gabriel Medina, who is set to take on Australian Jack Robinson in round three, expressed his fears about re-entering the water while current world No.1 Italo Ferreira echoed those sentiments.

"Two shark attacks in less than 24 hours here in Australia, just a few kilometres from where the event is being held," he said on Instagram.

"Don't you think that's dangerous?

"Is the safety of athletes not a priority?
