More than six million Americans have been told to evacuate Florida as the outer bands of Hurricane Irma hit the state.

The storm has been dropped to a Category 3 but has already whipped up at least one tornado, with Florida governor Rick Scott saying "our state has never seen anything like" this storm.

Tornado warnings have been issued for many parts of the state, with the eye of the storm shifting away from Miami to Tampa.

Governor Scott told Americans to take shelter immediately otherwise "you will not survive", with the situation an "obvious state of emergency".

He ordered 700,000 mandatory evacuation orders on Saturday, bringing the total to 6.3 million.

“If you have been ordered to evacuate, leave now — not tonight, not in an hour, now,” he said.

“This is a deadly storm and our state has never seen anything like it.”

Most residents have already evacuated, but more than 76,000 people remaining are already without power as blackouts hit.

Winds have already been clocked at 195 km/h, with the storm expected to strengthen after leaving Cuba to the south.

President Donald Trump has urged residents to "get out of its way".
