A resolution to the dual-citizenship debacle that has taken over Australian politics is still a fair way off, with the High Court today ruling that the matter will be heard over three days in October.

Deputy PM Barnaby Joyce, Matt Canavan, Malcolm Roberts, Larissa Waters and Scott Ludlam have all been referred to the High Court, with Fiona Nash and Nick Xenophon expected to join this list.

Pursuant to section 44 of the constitution, any person who holds dual citizenship is incapable of serving as a senator of member of the House of Representatives.

However, according to a report by Nine News, PM Malcolm Turnbull has expressed that based on advice from the Solicitor-General, the High Court may be more lenient in the application of this rule.

If it is decided that citizenship issues render the aforementioned politicians ineligible, it is likely that the next person in line on the party's Senate ticket at the last election will take their place.
