Racing has been suspended at the Southern 80 on the Murray River after serious accidents left one man dead and four others injured.

Two people were flown to Melbourne and two others were taken to hospital in Echuca.

All of them suffered head, neck or spinal injuries.

There were three serious accidents at the event, a ski race that takes place on the Murray river at the Victorian/NSW border towns of Echuca/Moama on the second Sunday in February each year.

Ski Racing Australia and Moama Water Sports Club released the following joint statement:

“Ski Racing Australia (SRA) and the Moama Water Sports Club are able to confirm that three incidents have occurred during this afternoon’s racing at the Southern 80 along the Murray River with several participants requiring attention from ambulance officers.

“SRA and the Moama Water Sports Club are, and will continue, to work with race organisers and relevant authorities to ensure those who require it receive appropriate care.

“At this stage it is too early to provide any specific details about the incidents or any of the participant’s condition.

“We will make further information available once it is received.”

It is the fifth fatality since 2006 at the event which gets watched by up to 100,000 every year and generates massive tourism income for Echuca.
