More than one in four university graduates say their degrees haven’t really done much besides look really nice in a frame on the wall, a new survey has found.

Some 97000 graduates and 4000 employers have participated in the Employer Satisfaction Survey, which also revealed more than half of employers don’t look favourably on management and commerce degrees, Nine News reports.

Among the 41 universities surveyed on behalf of the Department of Education and Training Queensland's James Cook University landed the highest approval rating, followed by the University of Notre Dame Australia and the University of the Sunshine Coast.

At the opposite end of the list, Murdoch University placed third last, followed by University of Adelaide at second last, and The University of Southern Queensland getting hit with the lowest approval rating.

Speaking about graduate employability, Australian Industry Group Chief Executive Innes Willox says the "real advantage" lies in student exposure to on-the-job training while they're still studying.

"With the complex and changing workplace of today and tomorrow, providing young people with opportunities to integrate theoretical knowledge with practice is now recognised as a key way to prepare them to contribute productively in the workplace," she said.
