22-year-old American, Otto Warmbier has died just six days after returning home to the U.S. 

The Uni student spent 17 months imprisoned in North Korea for allegedly stealing a propaganda poster before returning home just last week. 

Today his family has announced the news of his death.  

"It is our sad duty to report that our son, Otto Warmbier, has completed his journey home. 

“Surrounded by his loving family, Otto died today at 2:20 p.m."

After returning home in a vegetative state, his condition raised serious questions about his treatment in detention.

North Korean authorities denied any responsibility, suggesting food poisoning was to blame.

Doctors from the University of Cincinnati Medical Center, said Warmbier was suffering cardiopulmonary injuries and was unresponsive.
