Leader of the One Nation party Pauline Hanson has denied that she was mocking the Islamic faith in Parliament today after she wore a burqa during the Senate's Question Time.

Speaking on 2GB, Hanson said that the stunt was to raise the issue of the security threat of full face coverings, and insisted that the gesture was not intended to cause offence as "people have a right to their own faith and what they believe in".

Instead, Hanson said the issue lies where "that faith stops at a religion and then becomes a political ideology".

“I put it on in my office, the media were taking photos, I walked straight down the hallway, down the stairs. I met two security guards and I walked straight up the chamber," Hanson said.

“No one, no security guard at any point of time asked to see my face."
