The Prime Minster has spoken out after footage of him impersonating Donald Trump at the Mid Winter Ball at Parliament House was leaked, telling Channel Seven the great thing about Aussie's is we don't take ourselves too seriously.

Usually the Prime Minister's address is off the record, but it was aired by Nine's Political Editor Laurie Oakes, who didn't actually attend the event, but was given the vision.

In it, Malcolm Turnbull does his best Trump "The Donald and I, we are winning and winning in the polls. We are winning so much, we are winning, we are winning like we have never won before," he says.

While he also touches on an alleged link with the President's campaign and Russia, "I have this Russian guy… Believe me, it's true, it is true."

The US Embassy said it was not concerned by the speech. "We understand that last night's event is equivalent to our own White House Correspondents' Dinner," an embassy spokesperson said.

"We take this with the good humour that was intended."

While the PM told Seven it was all light-hearted fun. "From my point of view, my remarks as you can see I was sending up my own singular performance in opinion polls, and I was the butt of my own jokes". He said.

"Everyone complains politicians are too serious, and stitched up and reading from scripts and talking points, so I think it's good just to relax and be yourself and have a laugh".

The Prime Minster says we're a pretty unique nation, and we don't take ourselves too seriously.

"We are all larrikins, we don't take ourselves too seriously, I mean what other country has a term of endearment you old bastard!"

We're still waiting to hear what the President thinks...
