PM Malcolm Turnbull is pushing for a national facial recognition database to aid police and authorities using drivers license information.

Each state and territory needs to agree in order to get the initiative off the ground.

So far, New South Wales, Victoria, ACT and South Australia have indicated that they'll cooperate with the plan.

Under this system, the Federal government will be given access to the state's database of license information, with special security cameras then set up with software to help in the identification process.

"All of these databases are used already," Mr Turnbull said.

"Drivers licenses are accessible now - and are accessed.

"What we need to do is to make them immediately available and combine them with other biometric data, like passport photos, so that we're in a position to identify people in real time."
