Forensic crash teams have revealed they want to see every Australian car, motorbike and even bicycle fitted with a dash cam.

Senior Sergeant Simon Lamerton, from the Queensland Police Forensic Crash Unit, says the cam footage has been pivotal in solving crime.

"We routinely check vehicles involved in crashes for dash cam and also for witnesses to come forward with dash cam footage if they have any and it can be a vital piece of evidence in understanding how the crash happened and why it happened"

"If everybody had a dash cam on their car and everything was being filmed all of the time then police work would be a lot simpler. It's an excellent means of obtaining evidence"

Senior Sergeant Lamerton says the key is for people to make sure they know how to use them.

"Please don't delete them every day. If there's something on there that police may like to get from you, I think it would become apparent within a week or maybe two weeks"

"I ask people not to download any more quickly than that if possible".
