The fatal shooting of Australian woman Justine Damond has been ruled a homicide.

The Sydney bride-to-be was gunned down near her Minneapolis home by police officer Mohamed Noor on Saturday, after she called 911 to report what she believed was an assault in a nearby alley way.

The US medical examiner who performed the autopsy says she was shot in the stomach.  "This individual died of a gunshot wound of the abdomen," the Hennepin County Medical Examiner's Office said on Monday.

"Manner of death is homicide."

Her shattered family are left questioning how the 40-year-old, who was wearing her pyjamas and approached the police car, could have posed as any kind of threat.

The Minnesota Department of Public Safety Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) is investigating.

It comes as chilling police audio has emerged, detailing the moments after the shooting happened.

"Shots fired ... we have one down," one of the officers says.

"There are no suspects at large", another officer says.
