Counter-terrorism security is set to ramp up at Aussie airports with the Federal government confirming police will be able to demand ID from travellers.

Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton today announced that Australian Federal Police (AFP) officers would also be able to remove anyone from airports in a sweep of reforms which also include the rollout of advances X-ray and body scan machines, the Sydney Morning Herald reports.

“There's certain conditions that need to be met at the moment before police can ask for that identification," he said.

"Which is an absurdity and it’s an issue that the police have raised with us. So we're addressing an anomaly and a deficiency in the law at the moment."

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull told reporters the $294 million funding boost to airport security would also create an additional 190 counter-terrorism police roles alongside 50 technical and intelligence support positions.

“Keeping Australians safe is one of the essential obligations of government, the most important obligation,” he said.

“And thanks to the strong economy, as demonstrated in the Budget, which has been supported by our economic plan, we're able to bring $294 million of additional funding to keep Australians safe.”
