The Australian public will have the chance to vote on the legality of gay marriage on November 25, following reports that Coalition MPs have decided a postal vote will be held if the there is no support in Parliament for a traditional plebiscite.

However, the legality of a postal vote has been questioned, with the Labor Party and marriage equality groups not convinced that the government has the authority to spend Commonwealth funds on the vote, according to Sky News.

The Courier Mail has reported that marriage equality campaigners are bracing to launch a High Court challenge in the eventuality that a postal vote is undertaken, questioning the legality of this course of action without senate authorisation.
