Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has confirmed his plan to address the issue of MPs and senators being dual citizens.

Under the plan,  MPs and senators will be required to make a disclosure about their citizenship status within 21 days of a special resolution passing both houses of federal parliament.

The declaration will be made through the parliamentary register of members' and senators' interests and must state to the best of their knowledge they are not a citizen of another country.

They must also disclose if they have ever been a citizen of another country and provide evidence of citizenship renunciation if so

MPs and senators must also disclose their date and place of birth as well as those details for their parents.

Falsifying or making incorrect declarations it would be a serious breach of parliamentary privilege.
