Australian mining magnate and philanthropist Andrew "Twiggy" Forrest is urging the government to raise the smoking age to 21.

Forrest's organisation, the Eliminate Cancer Initiative, is behind the push to increase the legal age in a bid to cut the big tobacco company's profits and reduce the 12.2 per cent national smoking rate.

"We need to stop fuelling big tobacco preying on our vulnerable youth," said Mr Forrest.

He says since many adult smokers begin the habit at a young age, steps should be taken to increase the difficulty of obtaining a cigarette.
